Can I Stop Myself From Having a Wet Dream?

Medically reviewed by: Amy W. Anzilotti, MD

You can't stop wet dreams (ejaculating while sleeping) from happening. They might feel a little embarrassing, but wet dreams — also called nocturnal emissions — are a normal part of growing up and don't cause any harm. They happen because of a rise in the level of the hormone testosterone during puberty. You're likely to have fewer wet dreams as you get older.

You may wake up from a wet dream, or you may sleep through it. If you're concerned, keep a towel nearby. If you stay overnight at a friend's house, bring a change of underwear with you.

Chances are, some of your friends have had wet dreams too. They're pretty common, totally normal, and not a sign of a health problem. But they can be confusing at first. If you have any questions or concerns, talk to your doctor.
